I have a deep and unshakable belief that creativity in the cognitive era is about daring to design with real data to create innovations that matter for people and the world. The fundamental design strategies for all information no matter the medium or device is about working with sentences, tables, diagrams, maps, charts, images, video, data visualizations, and randomized displays for making graphical statistical inferences. To be a great designer you must be a truth seeker and teller - a data anthropologist and information alchemist. When approaching a complex problem I use these foundational design principles:

  1. Truth — uncover truth that motivates behavior and share it with impeccable craft.
  2. Action— understand and weigh the needs of society, business and people with the optimism of an industrialist.
  3. Magic — Set audacious goals that lend enable superhuman capabilities to a moment in time.
  4. Rigor— tell qualitative stories with quantitative data to inform and constrain complexity.

This morning I shared examples of work that stand as beautiful evidence that when inventors, makers and designers act with principle and conviction the results can change the world.
